Author Topic: Dxdiag says I am not using all of my RAM (Read 1395 times)

I just checked DXDiag to see if I had DirectX 10 so I could play Shattered Horizon, and noticed this:

My computer came with 4GB of RAM, it said right on the box.

DXDiag says I only have 2044mb (I'm supposed to have ~4000mb).

Is there any way on regaining this rogue RAM I'm missing? Or is it being used for something else?

Either you have 2 sticks of ram and 1 is not working, or an extremely large amount is being... used I would say? I know 32 bit only holds 4 gigs but can only really use like 3.5 with the OS I dunno if the OS actually uses it. But the most likely situation is 1 ram module is broken.

I highly doubt one stick is broken. Try reseating them both.

Actually, it looks like you have one:
"Run 64-bit DxDiag"

Looks like one of your RAM sticks is bad or loose.

Holy forget I have 64bit.

That's the reason behind "Program Files (x86)". So it's definitely my stuffty RAM plugs.

Most likely loose. I just ran DxDiag on my computer, 32 bit OS, and it showed all 4 gigs.

Yep. I'll work on that as soon as possible. That will for sure speed up my ass framerate.

I don't know what to believe, Control Panel or Dxdiag.

...Or does this mean that 50% of my RAM is being eaten?!

No, cuz otherwise I would be using 0 MB of my RAM...
Try running 64-bit DxDiag and see what it says.

Sometimes graphics cards use RAM too.

DxDiag does not tell you how much memory you are using, just how much you have. I'm running a 32 bit OS and it says I have 4 GB, which it wouldn't be able to say when reporting usage.

DxDiag would always say 3066MB for my RAM on 32-bit Vista, but when I upgraded to Windows 7 (without changing any hardware), it properly said 4 GB.
