Author Topic: Shading for computer art  (Read 2488 times)

Hey, I got a new tablet, and I've decided I should stop stuff shading. I shade by using a 3rd layer in between color and outline, and I just go along the inside of the outline with a color darker/lighter than the color of the second layer. It looks OK, but I want to get a little better. This idea works for more cartoony stuff; like my avatar. But for more serious drawings, it doesn't look very good at all, which is evident in Sheyl.

So how do you guys shade?

Those jagged and squiggly lines look like you wiped your richard on your tablet.

You also used pillow shading...yuck.

looks like its made of rubber.

I know it looks bad; incase you haven't noticed, the purpose of this thread is to fix the stuff shading.

Not go "Ew your shading is bad". Because guess what, I know it does.

You didn't even read the ever so short paragraph I wrote. A: You would have been able to infer I did not have my tablet when I drew this. B: I actually stated that my shading method was bad, and I'm looking for a better shading method.

Please read next time. If you say my way of shading is bad, what's your better way?

Blockland community, I am disappoint.

My statement still stands, your lines look terrible. The only line medium one should use if they are making art with a mouse is the Bezier Pen Tool.

A good shading method is to start out with the one you did originally then to layer matching values around it.

Look at some of these tutorials, they should help you:

Nuhuh. It's not art, just asking how to make better art. Trust me, Badspot moves anything that isn't art into Off Topic.

Double Toast: Those are pretty good, most are either out of my league or just not really within the art style I'm shooting for. But I saw one that looked pretty good, and after I eat I'll probably go check it out.

Well, I posted those tutorials to show you not how to draw, but how to paint and shade.

This one is old, but here is an example of good shading I made. I like yours, who is that? If it is, what game?
