Only time this ever happened to me was back in Win 98 and my hard drives would fail making it impossible to reinstall anything on them. Since you've already wiped your hard drives to reinstall to factory settings (and lord help you if you don't make monthly data saves to DVDrs) Just replace for a new HD and see if that works. 90% of the time that's the issue. the other 10% was from a install disc that was scratched too much. Either can cause a failure in reformatting.

BIOS got forgeted? Easy, just get a screwdriver and if your motherboard had two pins two reset the BIOS put the screwdriver in between the two and bam, its reset to factory default.

XP is inferior to Vista and 7. There is no demonstrable advantage; just prejudice against anything new.

You've not mentioned the advantages that Vista/7 has over XP. Also, that was my opinion. Don't like it, don't worry about it, it's my computer.

Windows 7 actually runs faster then XP, I personally like vista, I haven't had any problems with it at all.

Look online for a bios fix tut and show your dad. Get multiple sources, possible 1 from the manufacturer.

If the computer is not on, and fully unplugged, it wouldn't short it.

That and assuming you jump the RIGHT pins (assuming your motherboard has jumping pins to clear the BIOS), nothing will go wrong.
