Port Forwarding Explanation

My dad won't let me port forward, because he says we'll get viruses (Not True). Can someone give me an explanation, that's better than the ones I find on the internet plz?

I don't know how to say this without being rude, so I'm just going to be rude.  Your dad shovels coal for a living and I am a goddamn professional computer programmer.  I know more about this subject than your dad.  Port forwarding, if done correctly, is completely safe.

Some guy also PM'd Badspot asking for proof a few days ago and apparently got it.
