Author Topic: Will this run TF2?  (Read 3203 times)

Yeah, another topic. I know.
I found a Satellite laptop for about 875$. Here are the details:
Intel® Core™ i3-330M Processor 2.13 GHz, 3MB L3 Cache, 1066MHz DDR3
Genuine Windows® 7 Home Premium 64-bit
4GB DDR3 1066MHz SDRAM (2048MBx2)
NVIDIA® GeForce® 310M with 512MB GDDR3 discrete graphics memory
320GB HDD (5400rpm, Serial-ATA)
Lithium Ion battery (6-Cell, 4000mAh)
Will this run TF2? If so, on what settings?

Yes it will run it, probably on a mix of low and medium settings.

Ergh
What would you suggest to make it a bit better? Better processor? Better graphics card?

All good and all but I would recommend a better graphics card. I really don't know much about video cards but I was told that 512MBs is weak.

I have a 512MB video card and when I played TF2 my FPS was kinda low.

???
The GeForce 310M isn't released yet...at least I don't think it is.

Nevermind, I guess they started releasing 310's for laptops.

All GPU's that I've had with 512 MB of VRAM works perfectly with any Source game max'd out.

I scrolled down to graphics cards :o

512MB should be fine for TF2.

Getting an ATI Radeon 1GB for my birthday.

Awesome.
So all in all, this'll run TF2 pretty well (question for all people who have posted on this topic)?

It's okay, but the thing's huge. Almost too huge to take anywhere, I'd say.
I'd get either a Desktop PC (which will be a lot better for the money) or if you need a good laptop, get something like this:

Smaller, has a bigger HDD. However, has less VRAM (which will cause a performance decrease for gaming, but should still be suitable for playing VALVe Source games.)

Ok people, you really need to learn that a graphics card's power is NOT measured by the amount of RAM it has, it mostly depends on the graphics card's processor. For example, I have a computer with a VERY old Radeon 9550 graphics card with 256 MB ram and it runs tf2 at about 15-25 fps on lowest at 800x600. In my newer computer with an 8800 GT 512 MB ram, I can play tf2 maxed out at 2048x1152 and constantly over 40 fps. Video card ram is a very small factor when considering a graphics card's power

You're wrong.
VRAM DOES affect how powerful a graphics card is. If you have a GPU with DDR3 VRAM, and the same GPU with DDR2 VRAM, there's going to be a difference (a big one at that). The 9550 you speak of had DDR VRAM (which is VERY slow), and the 8800 GT has GDDR3 VRAM, which is MUCH faster, and why TF2 runs better on the 8800 GT. Plus, if you're running a huge GPU-intensive game, and you don't have enough VRAM, it's going to use Shared System RAM to store whatever the GPU needs, which will also cause a performance decrease. That's mainly why the Intel GMA series of GPU sucks. It has no VRAM, and requires sharing RAM with your PC.

A GTS 250 (slow) with 1 GB of VRAM can get 41 FPS in Fallout 3 (max'd with HD pack), while a GTS 250 with 512 MB of VRAM gets only 27 FPS. That's quite a performance decrease.

Graphics Cards performance does depend on how much RAM it has.

I got a 17 in Dell studio and tf2 runs fine

I prefer desktops, but it can run it on medium/high graphics. Experiment with it.

Yeah, I think I might get a desktop. What do you guys think about:
