Paint.net, use magic wand tool, select the white areas and hit delete.

You can also use GIMP, but it's 100% harder. Photoshop works too (easy)

Also remember to save it as a GIF or PNG, and turn up the tolerance on the Magic Wand a bit. It helps get rid of the crusty white edges.

You have to select stuff and "add alpha channel", and it doesn't work, no matter what you do.

In GIMP all I had to do was:
Click the magic wand, select white area, click add alpha channel, and delete?

It can do pictures too, and is by far the easiest to use.
Save as a .png to keep transparency.
