You don't seem to understand how this software works. They go by blacklisting and whitelisting software. They stop viruses by knowing how they work after they've already infected someone, not before. Virus developers are always one step ahead. Sure they most likely monitor malicious activity on your PC, but making a clock tick backwards isn't malicious...
BitDefender is cheaper than Norton, and, from the reviews I've seen in the last 3 or so years, is usually rated the best.
