Author Topic: Computer is deader than disco  (Read 1130 times)

Ok, so my computer is dead. What happened was I came home from school to find my wireless adapter for my mouse and keyboard off, rendering both of them useless. I don't think much of it. I unplug the wires and the computer and blow out the ports and plugs thinking it's probably just dust hindering the connection. After several rounds of this I finally get the thing working.

Relieved and thinking I'm out of the woods, I decide to play Rise of Nations. About 15 minutes into the game, my computer goes into sleep mode which is odd because it's obviously not supposed to do that if it is receiving input from my mouse and keyboard. When this happens I notice that the wireless adapter is off again and so after more unplugging, inspecting the wires etc, I manage to get it on one more time and the same thing happens. It's late so I say forget it and go to bed.

The next morning I turn it on again and I decide to run a virus scan, knowing that if it just goes into sleep mode it will just run in the background and I can turn it back on and inspect the results later. As I go back to turn it off and back on (because it's the only way to temporarily get the wireless adapter working) it doesn't turn on at all. The lights indicating that it has been turned on light up but non of the fans or internal hardware work at all.

Any idea what has caused this? My computer is only 2 years old and is in relatively good condition. But things like the monitor, speakers, mouse and keyboard etc are a lot older.

Hardware Issues!

Any ideas on what I may need to replace?

Could either be a faulty PSU, not giving enough power to the system to keep it consistent and to power everything on there (your wireless adapter).
I'd probably try another PSU in the machine if possible.
Make sure it is high enough wattage.

If it had an onboard graphics unit not in use, switch to that and take out your GPU, and unplug an CD or hard drives not needed for boot/scan

Wow you're one hell of a genius! What was it, The part about it not turning on that gave you a hint?

The only solution is to bring disco bac-

Aw who am I kidding that's never gonna happen...

*moonwalks out*

It might have overheated due to dust inside the case/around the components.

If you have a carpet in your room, it's even more likely.

Oh, I should check lappy then. Try getting a new power supply, they're only like $15 so if that isn't the problem you haven't bloke the bank.

No no no no no.
Never ever buy a cheap PSU. You will end up frying your system when they lose power a couple months down the track. Always spend the extra, at least for a $50 good 80+ certified one from a reputable brand.

Wait, so average 6 cell laptop batteries cost about $100, and a good PSU is $50? So without those my laptop would cost $200.

try making disco popular again

overheat crashing lasts like 5 min at most. parts dont just stay hot hours on end when you walk away.

Desktop PSUs, not Laptop power bricks. WTF?
