What video card do you have, OP? That may help narrow things down a bit.
It would. Also, install the proprietary drivers for your video card if you haven't already. Issues arise in 3D applications when you use open-source drivers, like nouveau. If you're using an Intel GMA or the i915 driver, you won't need to install proprietary drivers for your video device.

I have a NVidia GEforce 8500GT

http://store.steampowered.com/browse/linux/ there are currently 225 games and the numbers are growing.
oh, thank you for proving my point, turns out that more like 1/10 of games are compatible with it!
people like you or Zeblote (idc how you spell his name) immediately bring down an OS without even trying it, its obviously not going to get any better. Being optimistic and trying it out is what eventually will make it better.
my dad is a programmer who uses ubuntu, i had some experiences with it and some with linux and i find windows way easier to use

yeah try the proprietary nvidia drivers, and what version of Wine are you running?
"wine --version" in a terminal will tell you

1.6-rc4 is the latest version

I'm running 1.4.1
Apt-get says it's the newest version fsr, how do I update?

Use the 1.5 PPA it gives here, and then I believe you just do 'sudo apt-get update' and update Wine.

I use linux and never got any issues tss. Ways better than windowscrap or macrap.

Just wait till later in the years..

Omg more arguments over the operating systems holy stuff.
Linux-Great for open party systems and development. Mac good for movie editing and processing. Windows, a combination of all and suitable for casual gaming and such.

Did I mention that Apple HATES gaming? And that Linux couldn't give two stuffs about it? Why do you think 87% of the indies prefer to launch on WINDOWS first?

Ex: Cubeworld.

not just casual, all gaming

I'm having a problem with Ubuntu now too, it seems its 13.04 that's is bringing about all of these issues. All of my shaders options are disabled using Wine 1.5 and Blockland actually crashes while downloading programs. This part is somewhat off topic but it am also getting an error with Steam and something with OpenGL GLX error and that direct rendering is disabled for 32bit applications (Steam and Blockland are both 32bit apps which is why I am stating this). So again this seems to be something with Ubuntu 13.04 as everything worked fine in 12.10 except unity was bigger resource hog.

Edit: I said downloading programs, I meant files.
