sounds like you need help son

revive thread with actual content
so I need help picking a distro (again)
what I'll be using it for is using it as an entirely seperate OS on different, and possibly old PCs. this will be a portable installation, so I'm installing it on my around 7 GB flash drive

I will be using it for mainly apps, small games, and internet items

My friends have already considered the following:
Puppy Linux
Lubuntu
and Linux Mint

I've also been mildly staring at elementary OS, but I don't know if that's any good.

can you please help me here?

How experienced are you with Linux? Because
arch
would be a bad idea if you just jump straight into it with no idea what you're doing.

Elementary OS is pretty good if you keep everything on one partition. I tried separating /, /boot, and /home and had to deal with GRUB bugging out into a rescue shell.
Probably the only distro where I wouldn't change much about it at all. I want to see Pantheon running on Arch correctly one day.

Ubuntu is OK. I personally dislike the 13.xx series, but 12.04 should be alright.

Puppy Linux - I can't comment on that as I've never used it

Linux Mint is pretty good. Cinnamon is awesome. It's based on Ubuntu as well from what I recall, so

ok fine I just assume everybody isn't dumb

you forgot android android is linix

my dad installed a knockoff of ubuntu/macos

called pear os, it's not that bad

I've decided I'm going with Xubuntu, as my USB is (mildly) old, 2.0, and it looks like it'd run well on older hardware.

Now here's the next step I'm having trouble with:
Setting up 2 different partitions.

I want one partition to be the OS, along with all the things I get (apps, games, etc.).
The second partition will be the root of the hard drive. The reason it's the root, is because some things I do require them to function on the root (AKA In The Groove 2 root folder).

Now, I have no idea how to partition, or if I need to at all, but this is something I'd like help on.

The second thing is that I need help installing it.
I've already "tried" 2 OSes, and it still had the disc that said for me to install it. I don't want to, I just want to keep it on my USB, without worrying about having to reinstall it onto my main computer.

The program I'm using to install it is Universal USB Installer - 1.9.5.1. What are the correct settings I need to use, and will I need to change some things upon installation?

Anyways, that's all I need help with for now.

pear is garbage

if I remember correctly xubuntu let's you set up partitions during the install, but that might just be for itself to install on
