Author Topic: Should Young Kids be allowed to access the Web? Ye or Ne?  (Read 2930 times)

I've been using a computer since ever with unrestricted access. I've ran into quite a few research sites by accident in my day. I remember as a little kid searching for the website to one of my favorite games, then I accidently clicked the wrong link and ended up at some webpage which was basically the photo of a woman stretching her to butt cheeks apart. Then there were all the viruses, boy that was a mess.

I will use my experiences and pass them on one day to the future generation so they don't make my mistakes. Assuming desktop computers are still around. Tablets, smart phones, and consoles are basically gimmicks. I will always love desktop pcs.

You're all kids to me, this place would probably be better with more people my age..

Not only is your unwarranted response filled with rediculous ego, you are starting to act like I used to on my previous account.

Not only is this a bad thing, it's just being a complete richard.

If you have the proper restrictions in place, a child can browse the internet acceptably, but never safely, because even with the good downloadable failsafes of todays age, they are not perfect and in no ways a mean to 100% prevent a kid from seeing something s/he shouldn't.

I would wait until a kid actually knows a little more about "the real world" before attempting to mingle with a crowd comparable to the BLF, this could really ruin a person's childhood and/or view on similar communities.

Up until I believe they're at an appropriate age, I'd give my kids access when I'm in the same place as them and I can supervise, but once they're ready, they can do whatever the forget they want.

The goal would be to prevent them being little stuffs on forums and to make sure they don't see most of the weird stuff that won't be ready for.

How many times can you do that

Anyone who answered 'no' is a dumbass. I'd say that a good half of my writing skill, math skill, and general knowledge comes from stuff I've acquired on the internet. Being on the internet when I was super young didn't make me a social reject or a loser, so I think that there's no long term repercussions as long as the kid still goes to school and has interaction with other children.

Also, I don't necessarily think that kids need Net Nanny to browse the internet since I didn't run into shady websites often when I was a little kid. Plus, I don't think that one time I accidentally wandered onto cliphunter when I was eight and saw a woman giving fellatio scarred me permanently.

Yeah, I agree with this. I bought blockland when I was 11 and that was kind of my first introduction to the internet outside of YouTube and LEGO.com. I'm glad my parents never installed any sort of monitoring system that restricted my internet access, because I'm sure that it would have had a big impact on stuff I've learned and discovered from having unfiltered, unrestricted access.

Also, side note; Something that really helped me to learn not to be a dumbass when I first started playing, was when people on blockland would call me out on my stuff whenever I did something stupid. Really helped me learn to be critical on some of the stuff I do and say.

I don't think kids should be 100% blocked from the Internet either, but I think some sort of supervision is necessary. Not everyone's kid is/was as smart as you are.

younger children should have heavy supervision so they dont start doing things they shouldnt
once they've achieved the capability of acting mature, they can go ahead and browse freely.

i mean i used to play games and draw things on paint as a little kid but my cousin/dad were always there to set up whatever i was going to use and check i wouldnt forget up

but completely locking them out of the internet is not the way to go in my opinion

Because the current emphasis is on slim, sleek, mobile devices for office work and just casual use. For gaming they have been trying to make consoles standard forever. However currently steam is what is keeping PC gaming a float. Thanks to valve and minecraft PC gaming has gained more reconignition. However in Microsoft's eyes they want more emphasis on mobile devices as demonstrated by Windows 8 and the metro UI. Windows 9 will also most likely have a UI option for touch screens.
