Author Topic: dont you just love video game journalism  (Read 1538 times)

They also think video games can be art, when they blatantly attack anybody who tries to criticise video games, and deny the fact that video games are just an evolution of physical games like sport, board games, card games, playground games etc.
except video games are art since the definition of art is just human imagination and creativity or something along the lines.

And producing video games is a skill, which is also considered an art.

What about PC Gamer? I used to read that magazine a lot.
Not sure who they're owned by, but I enjoy their news articles. Unsure about the reviews.

Art isn't just creativity. Some guy put some bricks into an art gallery. Another guy put a picture on the wall of a pipe, with the words "This is not a pipe". Both of those were revolutionary pieces of art, made using very basic techniques that even you and I could have done.

Art isn't just about skill or imagination, although they can help. It's about the message it conveys and if it can be interpreted differently by different people. If your work has one solid meaning, it's not art. If your work can have many different interpretations, and it can lead to a discussion, then it becomes art.

EDIT: Right now, video games are not art since we're denying the right to fair criticism. If the criticism is wrong, then sure, tell them that, but don't personally attack them because they have differing opinions to you.

EDIT2: I'm going to stick a rant in here because I'm tired and I don't want to have to make an entire blog entry tonight.

I find it loving handicapped when people say that they want their games to be treated as just games and entertainment because "that's all they are", but when they have corruption in the industry, mainstream media treats games and gamers immature and we see a lot of shooters and casual games being more successful than other games and they start crying that it's not fair and that games should be treated serious and that they're art, forgetting they asked for games to be treated as little toys in the first place.

This isn't to anybody on the BLF, but to those who do this, grow the forget up. Read Marshall McLuhan's "The Medium is the Massage". Read Raph Koster's "A Theory of Fun". Look through any number of Gamasutara articles or Jonathan Blow speeches. Games could be an incredible tool for human society, but it's because of gamer hypocrisy, we can't treat them as any more than toys. You must realise that there are huge social impacts as a result of every media, right? Books changed the world we live in. Radio changed the world we live in. Film changed the world we live in. Games have so far amounted to the most useless medium because anybody who gives a damn is being pushed back and under by people who can't fathom that maybe just because you enjoy your games as past-times, that doesn't mean they can't do other things for other people as well.

As I said, it's not necessarily at you guys, more specifically towards people on Twitter and Reddit I've seen. Absolute loving tards who've probably never read a book in their life and will continue to live under the impression that games are just this little side thing that has no real effect on society.

i suggest just avoid rock paper shotgun, kotaku, polygon, and the escapist altogether. i'm probably missing some but you get the point
What's wrong with Rock, Paper, Shotgun?

Also follow authors not websites.

So Escapist = Bad

But Zero Punctuation / Jimquisition / etc. = ???

zero punctuation is a kinda-satire "ripping on games" video series made by one guy, so yeah it's p trustworthy

not to mention it makes great out-of-context screenshots

Loved it.

I also still like content from Yahtzee, Jim Sterling, MovieBob, JonTron, Tim Schafer, TotalBiscuit and a heap of other people who have all gotten involved in this stuffty "conflict".

Why are people still using magazines and websites for game reviews? Its 2014. Get with the program.

Why do you want a private business who depends on sales in the video game industry to tell you what games to play. Don't be a tool
