I loved the first one, I had it on the n64. (Still do :D)  I kind of liked the second and third, but the first will always be my favorite.  I just don't like how you don't get to go back and play some more after you beat it.

the n64 version, after you beat it you have to load the save that was before the final boss to play that save again

I liked Second, but the new characters didn't sit well with me. I missed Bow and Bombette and the like. I enjoyed the new locations, though. Especially Twilight Town.
