Author Topic: [OPINION] How has indie gaming affected the gaming market?  (Read 1340 times)

usually bigger gaming companies are only looking to make money, and the best way to do that is to do what the next guy is doing, then changing it a little bit

indie gamers realize that they have no chance of becoming nearly as popular as the bigger companies, either that or they don't give a stuff and just do it as a side-hobby. this is usually when they come up with more innovative ideas, because any normal person wouldn't really want to make the same thing over and over again.

that's like being an artist who only draws squares in the same color and position

Sum'd up in three words? Made it better.

Some really good indie games have come out, though I'm not a fan of most of them.

As for the market, I wouldn't really know. It seems more and more indie games are running around, and at the same time, non-indie games are still heavy on the market. While it's true that there's less need for publishers now than before, they're still handy and still being used.

But as far as the games themselves go...
While to me, a game is just a game, whether under a publisher or not (aka indie).
However, there are some fine differences. For example, most indie games really show some neat new things never seen in most games, if ever done at all. Though, this could be a good or bad thing. Because some put a lot of effort into a bad idea, but hey, it's not like they have some bigshot publisher expecting the greatest moneymaker alive. They can make these mistakes. While non-indie games seem to expand and develop things we're already familiar with, they do it much better. Rather than a group of 5 people, they have a company working on improving every piece of the game. I can enjoy both sides and really, as long as someone makes a fun game, I'll buy it.

how the hell is "indie" a feature in the first place .....

I'm saying that a game should bank on being good and fun, and not using 'indie' as a selling point.

find one game that uses indie as a (strong) selling point

(screams it at you, large text, boasts about it, etc)

I wasn't trying to say that all of them, or indeed any, do, but I was still just saying. Oh well, I guess it was kind of a bad point.

Indie companies are the only hope I have of good games because big titles will always be simple and generic to reach the biggest market they can.

I can list a few recent non-indie games I've enjoyed.

Armored Core V
Twisted Metal
BlazBlue series (even though I suck at it)
Pokemon B&W
Boarderlands 2
Guild Wars 2
Mario Kart 7
Probably missed a few too.

Most of these indie games have very good concepts and gameplay, but the graphics are always retro for the sake of being retro. It kind of bothers me.
