Tomodachi Collection and Tomodachi Life are two games released in 2005 and 2013 respectively.
The Tomodachi series is a series of life simulation games. It's like The Sims, but with more focus on humor and being completely weird.
The gameplay involves you owning a small island while observing the miis and solving their problems and playing games with them.
Tomodachi Life (3DS) is the game we got. Tomodachi Life is most likely a severe improvement over it's prequel for the Nintendo DS.

Tomodachi Collection (DS) is the game we didn't get. It laid out the main idea of the franchise, and it was well recieved. Mostly.
Since i don't own it, i'm assuming it's a watered down version of Tomodachi Life.
