Author Topic: Pronunciation of water  (Read 3277 times)

I keep thinking I've been saying wrong. So I decided to ask, how do you say water? I say "W ah tur"

War Ter

As it looks, so it sounds.
If that doesn't work, Woor Tur said quickly has the same effect.

I have a black friend who calls it wader

What-Er
No, that's how they say it in Captain Planet, and that is sick and wrong to be spreading that kind of English.

Y'all be messin' up my words :(

I'm pretty certain it's wo-tur.

Then again I'm too tired to look it up. The tricky part is that pronunciation tends to vary wildly across the English speaking world. However for water I'm pretty certain it's pronunciation is universal but don't quote me on that, I'm not certain.

Pronounce it how you wish.

Screw off, prescriptionist.

I get nauseous just thinking about saying it like that.
I regret watching that show as few times as I did.

War Ter Is a good start.
War = Woor.
Ter = Tuuh.
Keep it short, and don't stress any syllables.

loving hick
I said don't stress syllables.
WOOORRRTUUUUURRR is not the goal here. Saying it quickly, War-ter sounds fine.

I hate people who say "war-er"

I looked it up, I had to know.

Pronunciation: \ˈwȯ-tər, ˈwä-\

The ó has an "a" sound but is still an o, like the word:  "cot" (caught being pronounced the same way.)  Where as ã is like as seen in the word ass.

So it can be pronouced as either waa-ter or wa-ter.

Imitation of an English accent, or some of their more vibrant ones, i'd guess.
Also obnoxiously stereotypical Australians.

Do you say Whater? Wahter? W- Ah - Ter? IDK. Sounds silly to me. Every time you hear it commonly, War-ter sounds like the most common use. Not drifting too heavily toward Woor or Wah.
