Bisjac, I also am going to hurt you for making me addicted to this game.

i dont know what it is about this incredibly old game that is so fun.
Its a strat/sim/sandbox multiplayer game. i guess its hard to find games like this.

It loses some of it's pizzazz when you finally master railroads, but it still is a game I can pick up at any time.

Oh. My. God.
This reminds me of Roller Coaster Tycoon. I always loved those games :)

inorite? it reminded me so much of it when i started making railroads.

yes free.
OpenTTD is a remake of transport tycoon deluxe, that went abandoneware long ago.
the community that remade it added multiplayer, and fixed pretty much the entire game.

If anybody is having trouble installing OpenTTD on the latest version of Ubuntu with the error that it's missing libicu38, read this thread for a solution:

Also it doesn't come with a graphics set installed by default. There isn't any kind of popup that tells you this, you have to run it through the console to see it. Download OpenGFX and OpenSFX and move the folders opengfx-0.2.1 and opensfx-0.2.1 into the ~/.openttd/content_download/data directory.

You can also just dump the files sample.cat, trg1r.grf, trgcr.grf, trghr.grf, trgir.frg and trgtr.grf into the data folder if you want the windows graphics.

I haven't quite figured out where to put the music to get it to play. Fortunately linux recognizes the file structure as being a midi file (unlike windows which just reads gm extension and doesn't recognize it) so you can actually just open up the music files in any old music player and make a playlist without having to change the file extension.

EDIT: The music sounds different under linux because it has a different midi kit. Also the last 3 or 4 seconds of each song contains some magic code that TT needed but seems to crash other players.

EDIT2: Opening and resaving them in rosegarden will let you play them again. Not in the game though, only in a seperate player. It seems music doesn't work in the game on linux.
