I don't like it because it seems like the only reason that it's been getting so many positive ratings is the effects. Plus it's overhyped. I hate overhyped things.

Avatar won five stars for every rating, only the best films win it. And it looks like it will.

From what I've read and researched about the movie, I'm not impressed. When it comes out on DVD I'll find a stuffty quality online version where you can barely make out what's going on so that I can judge the movie almost solely on the plot and storytelling.

Any movie that you "have to see in theaters" isn't a good movie. I'm not saying that theaters don't enhance a movie, but if you have to see it in theaters for it to be good, it's not good.

I loved Avatar, but no, it does not deserve best picture. Definitely best visual effects/animation/whatever though. And perhaps even musical score.

"Oh dear, this movie is rated R! Therefore, it sucks!" (Yes, unfortunately, I know people like that)

Your "judging a book by it's cover". You just can't give a movie a good or bad rating until you actually watch it.
