So last night I'm playing some STO when out of the blue my screen goes blank and switches to the digital label and the lil power light on the monitor starts blinking. That only happens when I turn my PC off. My PC was still running. So I tried to figure out why it is doing this and turns out that my video card is in the process of overheating and shutting itself down. How do I know this? I have a burn on my finger from trying to push it in to make sure it wasn't coming loose. In any event, I took a portable fan, lugged it to the side of my PC tower and have the thing on at full blast. Think this will help any? I'm hoping so as it has been doing this repeatedly from just sitting on the desktop with nothing running.

In any case, discuss temporary fixes you make to your computer to keep it working until you can get something to fix or replace the problem.

Have you checked the graphics card's fan for dust?

It is relevant. That's what I said when I burned my finger.

And yeah I gave everything a good dusting when I put it together, so it should still be relatively free of dust.

My graphics card is doing that right now too. D:

Well the fan I'm using is keeping it from overheating, so I guess I found a temp solution for now. Try it Tom, might help you as well.

Clean the complete inside of your tower with compressed air, this used to happen to me a lot, it means that your Graphics card is quite dirty, and it will start happening with other things so clean it,
Before i knew this was the cause, i was soundless, Videoless, and almost powerless. I had to open 5 windows to get the cloud of dust out, it was like The Mist, but made of brown crap, in my house.

My laptop's GPU died a while ago and while replacing it I lost one of the screws for the GPU's fan. The laptop doesn't have the fan blowing directly on the card, but rather a tube leading to a heatsink that is then cooled by the fan. Incidentally, they sent me a new tube with new thermal paste on it. Unfortunately, it was bent wrong, so I had to bend it manually to fit. Luckily for me I got it to fit as well as hold in the loose fan. Killed two birds with one stone.

I managed to lose all of the screws that came with my desktop's computer case, so I end up having to ration them around. My hard drives are fitted with half of the screws they should be, lol.

I infected my Windows98 and XP on my network accidentally setting loose a half-assed virus I was going to send to my friend for April Fools.
IT HURT.

clock up the video card fan from its stock speed to 100%

Overclock your monitor to 2560x1600, your hard drive to 2TB, and your PSU to 1000w.

fonzie it upside the head and swear alot lol

Whenever my comp is lagging or freezing up and I hit it it ALWAYS stops.
