but anyway

toyota is obviously plotting against us

This article is a bit over a year old, so it should still be somewhat valid:

Obviously Toyota will be on that list now, but even still, Ford is on their four times and I'm sure most of you would still buy one.

The fact that this happened is probably a good reason to buy a Toyota. If you think about it, this will make them want improve their quality control and engineering, and thus improving the overall quality of their products.

This kind of thing can happen to any car manufacturer, and anyone saying, "I will never buy a Toyota because of the recall" might as well stop trusting everything man made.

Turn the car off...?

That is the worst thing you could ever do. Shutting off the car will cause the pedals to lock as well as the fact that it will no longer let you steer. So while you've successfully killed the engine, you are still going the same speed, except now you can't steer to avoid walls, cars, ex.

The best thing in this situation would be to put the car into neutral. While the engine will start to race, no power will go to the wheels. You simply have to steer the car while you lose momentum. This will also let you use the brakes/Emergency brake. Once the car comes to a stop then you can switch off the engine.

Would attempting to slow the car by scraping it on a barrier be a horrible idea?  I don't know if that would just make you swerve into the wall or something.  Obviously it would probably destroy the side of the car.

It could work but it could potentially flip and like you said damage the car.
