It could be some thing different that doesn't involve legendaries in their stroy but just as side characters like red version or the original silver and gold

They could do some Psychic/Dark/Ghost/Poison combo for the starters, not that I support a change in the usual Fire/Grass/Water combo

Though Ghost would be a dumb starter because it would resist every attack the normal Pokemon that are in the first route can use

Ratatta and Raticate could learn super fang, which was awesome. Zigzagoon and Linoone had pickup so they weren't all bad. Sentret and furret were useless and Bidoof/Bibarel were a loving joke.
