Someone explain the black ones to me.  I know how to get them but what exactly do they do.  It says trap souls of NPCs. but how? thanks..

I think you need to cast some form of soul trap spell first. Then beat the stuff out of the creature.

Oh.  I think I get it.  Spell trap an NPC while having an empty black soul gem and kill it. Therefore the soul is yours.  Agh, I just made a warrior and deleted my mage.  Bummer.

I think it's used for a quest, to get some pendant thing.

You can find/make a weapon that has a soul trap enchantment on it. Its easier to soul trap with a weapon that soul traps. Just keep attacking with it and you will kill/soultrap no matter what cause every attack adds more time to kill.

Yeah, but you'll run out of charges eventually. Would be better to get or create a soul trap spell that's on touch but has a longer duration, then attack it till it dies.

I have a spell which gives 10 points of shock damage for 10 seconds while soul trapping for 11 secs.
now all i need is an enchanted weapon :P

Yeah, that works perfectly. Beat the monster down until its almost dead, use your custom spell, and get the soul.

incase it resists shock damage, i use a weakness against fire damage 100% and shock damage 100% and frost damage 100% and magic 100% for 10 seconds, and immediately after, i cast my soul trap shock spell.
and sometime, i cast the weakness spell twice on him so its weakness 200%
i has the "devils spell" which cast all types of damage 6 points for 6 seconds.
It killed guards in one hit, before I leveled up to level 25 in some kind of leveling growth spurt.






im still not done leveling, and because i chose apprentice sign, any necromancer and the mythic dawn can insta-kill me.
