I've been reading the past few pages and found some silly stuff.
That thing where you can only put the leeches on the upper corner is a myth.
You can take of ALL your equipment off and fill leeches with ALL equipment slots.
Also, have you guys ever considered living in a grassland or hearthland? Aurochs, mouflons, and chickens spawn everyday, not to mention four-leaf clovers and inkweeds.
So far I wasted all my leeches since I have a cupboard full of wool, which can be turned into gauzes. Gauzes are the stuff here. They never reduce SHP. They just heal very nicely.
We've also killed TONS of auroch herds now. Our cupboards we're so full of bones and beef and leather that we had to make a new timber house. We killed them all with just slings. High q slings however, from my good friend roosternose (Monty) who has a full nature and q40 crops.
You can also lay stone on grassland without plowing them. Try considering in living in a grassland if you want your survival chance to increase. (That is, if you don't have a mine)
I go full industry because my friend Frank here lets me use his mine and trading metal stuff for beef and my new friend Tiago who's trading tin for copper. So yeah, good ol' bronze. :3
