Author Topic: Computer Purchase part 2: Graphics Card.  (Read 2420 times)

Hello folks.

Next up on the agender for computers buyin', I have a little ways to go in terms of saving (it would help if someone bought my in-really-good-condition iHome for $80, PM me) but I figure I should get as much information on this before I make a purchase, so I'm starting the thread now.

I'm leaning towards the Radeon HD 5770 in this combo: http://www.newegg.com/Product/ComboDealDetails.aspx?ItemList=Combo.347270 but if you guys can find a better card (you'd have to find RAM too) for right around the same cost (RAM and GPU, though they don't need to be in a combo. Just comparable price added together) the same price.

My initial question is this: Will I be able to max any current game with Antialiiasing at 1600x1200 resolution no problem with that GPU and a decent processor (I'm looking at the AMD Phenom II X4 955 3.2 Quad)?

Thats a good graphics card from what I hear.

What would make that ram run better with an amd processor?

If you want to spend the money you'd probably be better of with a card from the 5800 series (5870 perhaps), to maximize your games' graphics.

forget that noise, I'm already a little bit over budget with that GPU, I decided to splurge a bit. The only other GPU I might buy is the GeForce GTS 250, but then I'd still need to get the RAM a little under $100 to compete with this combo deal and I've heard that the 5770 is better anyway.

I already decided to "spend the money" as you said, and I think at this point I'm at my price limit; I don't want to spend more than a $1000 on this build.

All under $100 for 4 GB of the same type.

Your combo after rebate: $252.98
Separate after rebate: $241.98

I did that with the $81.99 RAM instead of the $79.99 one as well.

Will I run into problems with any of those? It seems like they have rather low reviews.

80$?
Good luck.

Your choice. I was just suggesting a different option. Both sets of RAM seem to have issues with defaulting to 1066 MHz instead of 1600 MHz.

Tbh, you should wait with deciding parts till you have money for the whole PC.

its not a good idea to buy a part at a time when you can afford it.
by time you have the complete thing, the earlier parts are outdated to more powerful things of the same price you paid.
plus your not getting any closer to use a computer by physically HAVING the incomplete parts.

plus if its a site like newegg or similar, you want your 30 day returns and trade ins to be the same date.
same with your part warranties. some are life, some are year by factory.

All I've ordered so far is the case and the psu, and I doubt cards will drop much in price in two months, but if you insist I'll pack away the case and PSU, and leave them untouched until I buy everything else.

Also, where were you guys when I asked if it would be a bad idea to order parts one at a time? Not one person told me "You shouldn't do this, period" when I made a thread about it.

... must not have seen that thread, I don't visit much here anymore.

Oh well, I doubt there will be any revolutions in cases or PSUs between now and June.

But regardless of when I purchase the GPU, can someone answer the questions in the OP?

them parts are fine. save money till you can do the rest at once.

a 5770 is slightly more powerful than a 260, so getting a 250 instead would be dumb. Also whoever mentioned a 5870 I think those are still over $300
