Author Topic: Rome: Total War  (Read 4255 times)

Just reinstalled it, had it for a few years now also with the barbarian invasion expansion, epic game, discuss.

I love this game, but I've been playing empire total war a lot more recently.

Is empire good? I have both Rome and Medieval II, but I didn't get Empire because there were a lot of comments saying that Steam made it really hard to access and troublesome.

Anyway, I love the series, it's brilliant, had a lot of fun playing it... Recently played it again, but as France, in about 200 turns I smashed Holy Rome, defeated England and Scotland, took over the Papal States, and started some wars with Denmark, Venice and Milan. Good times, French cavalry is really powerful.

And on Rome Total war it's fun to play as Greece, since the Spartans are so overpowered and own everything.

Yeah empire is good, but the only problem I have with it is that most of the combat is ranged which I'm not skilled at. Also, it is a lot of fun to play as Greece, I love spartan hoplites

Napoleon Total War came out a month ago, I'm trying to buy it. I need money though.

I dominated in Rome Total War as the Brutii. It got to the point where I was making so much money that I rarely fought unless it was to siege. My army was an army of diplomats. If I was moving a new army out to go conquer, I'd have two diplomats escort it, and along the way I'd buy more diplomats and send attacking armies back at the cities they came from to conquer them.

These are older, they don't show my faction when I won. Basically subtract all the Julii and Scipii on the map and you have the endgame for me.

Definately fun.

EDIT: Also, picture of my empire in Medieval II.

Nice map you got there, Right now I'm Brutii as well and I've been following orders from the senate and I've wiped out the Greeks and the Pontus (Spelling) and I've revolted against Rome and I've pushed out the Scipii out of Italy and they wiped out the Numidians so that's where they're at now, I've wiped out the S.P.Q.R. and Rome is mine, and I'm trying to push out the Julii family out of Italy. Right now the Julii have conquered Spain and half of France, and the Britons control all of upper Europe them and the Egyptians are pretty much the largest land mass. I find that Egypt will be the hardest because I've tried fighting in the Desert when I wiped out the Carthagians and it took several years to get my troops across the desert just to capture a small town. Plus the years in siege.

My best game is Julii... I control all of Europe, except for most of Greece, some of Italy (I haven't bothered to go to war with the other Romans yet) and a small part of Spain, but it's got to the point where I have so many settlements they always seem to be at the point of rebelling, so I have to keep large garrisons everywhere, which was annoying.
So I started a new game as Greece, the only problems with it are that Macedonia controls nearly all of the Greek mainland, and they're fairly powerful at the start, and that Greece only has about two cavalry units, and one of them's just missile.
But so far I've done pretty well - If you play Greece well you can make your settlement on Sicily very powerful quickly by trade, and the trade that Sparta and Athens (after you capture it) make allows you to make armies to push Macedonia out of Corinth and back up North, and then you can send forces to Epirus and push the Brutii back from there, and then launch an assult at Italy itself.
I want to defeat Macedonia so I can play as them... they have good cavalry and good phalanxes.

for some reason I could never unlock Macedonia, I don't think it's playable unless you get mods.
is Medieval 2 fun?

I disagree, it's very tactical but for a real challenge play Hearts of Iron 2, it's still hard as forget WITH cheats.

Yeah even my original cities are starting to riot every turn, to the point of rebellion and I have them garrisoned entirely of troops, what I do to help is lower the tax rates a bit and increase the games from yearly to daily games and races, you won't make as much money but only do it for a few turns.

Basically my strategy is on any faction is to build up my trade and money until the point that I have about 1 million drenarii, that's when I start to build up my military. Takes a LONG time but it's worth it in the end, and by the time I have the money, all my troops that I built up over the process for partisan duty have golden experience and golden weapons and armor.

Tactical doesn't necessarily mean hard,
as for your strategy it seems like it would work great for every faction except the roman ones because your popularity with the senate would fall quickly because you wouldn't be completing their missions.

I think medieval II is lighter on rioting - Even after being excommunicated, having loads of religious disorder, killing and assassinating about 3 popes, having loads of generals with high dread status and not bothering to build any buildings that add to happiness, and still they don't riot with a garrison of about 200 militia.
Or maybe it was just because I was playing as France lol

In medieval - if you plan to conquer anything in your path and have a massive army before about 1400 you just have to ignore the pope, if he excommunicates you then fine, just gives you more reason to send a lot of troops into Italy. (if you're playing as a Catholic Faction)

Actually, can you even defeat the Papal States? I captured Florence (which they'd captured) and I took Rome, yet new Popes kept being elected, I'm not sure if they had taken another settlement off the Moors though, I'd have to check to see if they were living, but with no land. If the papacy's invincible that would really wreck my plans.

hey i just started can i try to play with sometines
