Excuse me, but I have a fairly cheap laptop right here that I use for moderate gaming, and it has never overheated. I don't even use a separate laptop fan, either, but with one of those it's impossible to overheat.

I have one of the cheapest Sony laptops, and its a great value. Get a Sony gaming laptop. I'm pretty sure that they have high performance, without overpowering it. Link here.

One laptop =/= statistics for a lot of laptops.

Anyway, with the Alienware, you could shave off $300 by only having one 4870, and you could also downgrade your i7. I'm not that good with processors, so would anyone be able to recommend what would give him relatively good performance?

He currently has a i7 920XM 2.0GHz (3.2 turbo) in it.

You probably wouldn't need a SSD and would be able to shave $500 off if you went for a standard 500GB HD.

EDIT: I said full cards, I have a 5870 and it runs around 70 C on full load, I don't see you getting better ventilation on a laptop. The power consumption of the card would drain the battery in no time so you would have to have it plugged into the wall. That kind of ruins the whole mobile thing

Why would you bother with that GPU? Like I said, you don't know what you're talking about. You can't upgrade laptops without difficulty and that is not good for games and would hardly get him good framerates on mid detail on the games he wanted.

Why do you absolutely need a laptop? You're most likely not going to be hauling the thing around. Save a lot of money (and heat issues) and buy a desktop PC for gaming.

Get a cheap laptop, get nice a desktop. There is no point of having a laptop for gaming. Even if you are traveling you shouldn't be on the computer you should be enjoying your vacation :P
