I give up with stairs.

I've tried placing down stairs.. then going a level bellow and mining the area out - NOTHING.

Tried up and downstairs. once again nothing.

They wont even mine out the bottom from the bottom!

Someone care to tell me step by step how to do it!!

I'm so fustrated this doesnt make sense.

I'm building a staircase to go down, so it builds on the floor above and i try to mine out the bottom to place another staircase! but it doesnt mine out! and i cant place a staircase on the floor bellow because the wall is there

GAHHHHHHHHHHH

Open Designations (d) and select and select Downward Stairway (j). Place one where you want your stairs. Go down one layer (>) and select Upward Stairway (u).  Place one in the exact same spot. Stairs! You can also substitute any of those with Up/Down Stairway (i) if you want to go more than 2 layers.

If you want to make stairs in the open/a mined out square, you'll have to use Building (b) -> Wall/Floor/Stairs (C) -> Up Stair (u), wait for the dwarves to build it, then go up a layer (<) and put a Down Stair (b->C->d) on top of it.

MOTHER forgetER IVE BEEN USING BUILD stuff

a piece of advise for people, dont try doing anything involving moving water until you've figured out how to play well, i flooded so many fortresses when i first started playing this, it is possible to do it right though since i just build an under ground lake under the ocean :)

My old fort crashed while saving (forget YOU WINDOWS 7, YEAH, IT'S PROBABLY CAUSING IT TO CRASH) and it corrupted the save file or some stuff.
I've generated a new world because for some weird ass reason I cant reused world 3 (my really large world that took atleast 2 and a half hours to generate) and this world IS LOADED WITH hematite, limonite, and magnetite. I've hit coal too, and plenty of gems.
I've already also hit a metric asston of native gold. I've got slate and gabbro on this level so I'm bound to hit platinum soon while mining, and I plan on digging down and getting into the magma seas to immediately so I can begind making iron and gold for trading/weapons.
Also unlike my older save, I've actually hit the underground caverns this time so I'll have to make another central staircase to go around it down to the magma seas.
ninja edit:
AAHAHHA, FIVE SECONDS AFTER POSTING THIS I HIT PLATINUM
woo.

Don't hate on Windows 7, it's the best build that Microsoft has released.

I love it. It's just crashing all the time on Dwarf fortress.
Windows 7 is loving amazing.

Mines crashes alot too when i save..

but it seems like it saves then crashes atleast because the save still works :P.

Struck native silver and stuff to make tin.
This place is loving loaded.

Please don't tell me that all that magma is on the SAME Z-level as the forge? The forge also needs to built built partially OVER an open source of magma to work.

Whats everyones setup...

I usually carve into the mountain and make a huge stockpile room bedroom and farm area and dinning room area right away...

then i progress onwards to crafts then metal crap.

My farm is my main source of food though.

I was finaly able to set up a good supply of water, i have a brook right beside me so i channeled it into my fortress :)

Also are any of you having trouble with your military... i make loads of leather armor but they just dont pick it up.. am i doing something wrong?

Am trying this out :3
