You're pretty much forgetting the loving point. RPG=A game where you play a character in his story until the end. IT DOESN'T NEED TO HAVE EXP TO BE AN RPG. EXP(Experience Points) CAN BE USED IN ANYTHING, BUT IT'S NOT AN RPG ELEMENT.

RPG Elements:

Story of a Journey/Quest
Character
Growth

The rest are just GAMEPLAY ELEMENTS THAT CAN BE FOUND IN ANY GAME.

Those aren't elements, it's rather a basic concept for an RPG.

The elements that I'm referring to, are RPG gameplay elements. And earning exp and leveling up is a part of it.

The exp system doesn't belong to RPG genre alone, that was my point. Having an EXP system doesn't mean it has RPG elements. RPG elements would refer to using that exp to IMPROVE your character's overall stats, now THAT'S RPG element. In shooters, EXP is used to unlock items you already have but couldn't use and Rank Up; These do NOT improve your character's overall 'stats'.

Sandbox*

Indie*

Sandbox isn't a category, I don't believe.

Retro (pre 1990)
Superman 64 (huehueheu)

RPG/MMORPG
Would like to seriously nominate TES 4: Oblivion

Strategy/RTS

I'd nominate starcraft II  but it isn't out yet

Indie
Blockland hurr

Nominate the SCII Beta. ;)

Sandbox isn't a category

not in this thread yes  but the game is sandbox

Pre 1990 : River City Ransom

Indie : Cortex Command AND BZFlag

I see the multiple suggestions to split the MMORPG/RPG categories were ignored.
Aswell as adding the Action category.

Though I'm wondering why retro, which isn't a genre but actually when the game was released, is going up against genres (shooter) and the status of people who worked on the game (indie).

Wouldn't certain games fall under multiple categories in this situation? Tetris would go under retro AND strategy, while cave story would fall under adventure and indie.

Strategy: Empire Earth 2

Adventure: Jak 2

Fps: Modernwarfare 1

Damnit put Darwinia on the nominations

Needs moar banjo kazooie.

RTS:
PIKMIN AND PIKMIN TWOOOOO!!
