Author Topic: Why was the "planets" map moved to the fail bin?  (Read 4818 times)

The map was never properly ported to the current add-on system.  The person who tried forgot to include half the textures.

I believe it was moved to the fail bin for being poorly ported, but the map in it's entirety has plenty of issues besides that:

  • Huge file sizes
  • Planetary spacing too large
  • General appearance does not fit BL
  • Interiors problematic and limiting
  • Lacked interesting spaces for exploration/building

...to name a few.

I'm designing a remake for 'The Planets' map that should retain (and enhance) the uniqueness of the original, whilst being easy to use, fun to play on, and less buggy. It will be a complete remake (as in I have no intention of reusing old files).
Ok, so we have two intelligible answers. Why is everyone still bickering on who has the map?

Someone else ported it and includes the texture.

How about we have one version that's the original version that everyone likes, and yours will simply be another version.  Everyone wins.

I have experimented with having different versions of maps to suit different players/servers but ultimately it isn't worth the hassle, nor does it lead to any appreciable increase in map quality.

One idea I tried with the original Planets map was having two versions, one high quality and the other low, so that players with different grades of computers could have fun in the map. It worked alright at first thanks to the fact that I started off with low-poly models and small textures and already wanted to upgrade them, but it quickly ended up doubling the necessary workload that went into updating and releasing the map. Attempting to have two versions of the map was a bad solution to a critical problem with the map; I was being overzealous with the detail of the objects. Instead, I should have tried to reach a compromise in terms of visual quality and performance.

My hope is that players will find the new map to be equally as enjoyable to play on as the original. Having the original still in circulation only serves to motivate me to make the map significantly better so that server hosts and players will make the transition to the newer map.

If you're talking about moving the planets in real life part you're a bigger dumbass than I thought and you're a pretty big dumbass.

Apparently your sarcasm detector was made by the same people who make the brakes for Priuses.

I think this map should be remade with cube shaped planetoids/astroids that are unique. (fire planet, water plant, sand planet, etc.)

Spherical planets with real-world textures are great from the stand point of being instantly recognizable to the player, but don't really fit with the simplistic, angular, theme expressed in almost every facet of BL. In addition to that, it presents some technical challenges and shortcomings in terms of implementation that further discourage their use. My intention is to instead use "cubular" planets that will fit with the style of BL and offer numerous improvements over the old system. Whilst it may not be necessary for every single map/item/vehicle to fit into the style of the game, it certainly makes sense when it also improves gameplay, performance, and helps avoid unnecessary technical challenges.

I think the original map should stay the same, but have somewhat new textures and planets. And the sun. It scared the hell out of me every time I flew through it.

What could be wrong with the sun? Was there sound in the sun?

Needs moar gravity boots to walk on the underside of planets. And the planets shouldn't be too cubular, it should be like this kind of blocko planet.

A basic texture update would be a waste of time. I plan on a complete remake that will be worth a whole lot more.

I experimented with a couple of different methods for including a sun in the map. It started with the model you see in the current map, but someone did make one or two emitters that turned out to be far too demanding. There used to be a whole system of zones (courtesy of Nitramtj) that killed the player if they flew into the sun or flew too far off into space. The zones also simulated different gravities on planets and in space.

@Homfrog: The sun was completely empty. Just there for looks, but I never remembered that.
And I see what you mean by "cubic planet" that thing looks badass.

@Reactor Worker: So are you going to make the new map or not? And if so, is there an expected release date?

Reactor Worker are you still enthusiastic about my proposedspaceship designs? I dug them up again a few days ago and got thinking about how you forgot to put them in your map!

Yes, I do intend to make the map. I have no intention of setting a release date though.
