i doubt we will see anything beyond 56k, i think diamond multimedia did had a dual modem (2x56k) which theoratically used to work if your isp supported it

connection speeds depends a lot on line condition and also on your cpu load if your cpu is under load and you try to connect you will end up having a crappy connection, ofcourse i am saying this assuming you are using a software modem (which are the most common types available now days)
