If you haven't noticed, the space core knows what he is going to do when he is plugged in: go to space. He tries to send the chamber to space, that's why all the fires are starting.

Once you do, indeed clear that fog. I know the Space Core was launching the room into space, and I know it'd be so hyper as to try right away... But wouldn't it imagine itself in a rocket?

The panels come off with GLaDOS' head now, don't just break off. remember, that was an early beta of the space core sequence.
