Author Topic: New Engine?  (Read 12084 times)

No, he wouldn't. That's A LOT of work to do, and A LOT of work down the drain. If anything, he should simply upgrade the current engine to meet Blockland's demands.
The current engine is out dated, he should upgrade BL to Torque 3d.

Badspot has earned $198,000 so far from Blockland.

Including the costs it took for him to make Blockland and everything that goes along with it? (This website, for example)

And if he can't?

And can he just copy the code?

He can't just copy the code, because he wouldn't know if some if not most parts of the code conflict with the new engine or not.

It's not easy upgrading engines. I think Blockland is currently fine on its current engine minus a few scratches like the odd lighting.

If you think about it, once v16 makes the rest of the bug updates and v17 creates some polishing, v17 may just be the last update blockland will ever have!

But that's only a 10% chance because then people will take up the rest of the possibilities for blockland mods, everyone will get bored of those, everyone will leave blockland because it's too old and Badspot will hang himself.

Uh, no. None of this is really plausible.

No. It goes like this.

Update has bugs
New update fixes bugs
Previous update creates more bugs
New update fixes bugs
Previous update creates more bugs

with content added in with each update.

He would add more features.

Dammit

Blockland is already running a heavily modified version of the engine to the point where you can't really call it less updated than newer versions of TGE. Improvements and patches that were backwards compatible with the old engine and were needed were added. TGEA isn't necessarily an upgrade, it's a jump from one totally different engine to another.

People suggest switching the engine all the time without any really great reasons. If there's something from another engine you want in Blockland, suggest it. Badspot has the source code to the existing engine. Given enough typewriters, monkeys, and time he could add whatever feature you could possibly want to the engine. If it's Collada model support you want, or multiple terrain blocks, fancier physics, some funny language interpreter, suggest it, instead of saying "switch to the portal engine so i can play with portals."

What.

No. That'd never happen.

Don't pretend to be Nostradamus again.

But then they stop running in the wheels and the forums get slow :(

Well I have heard Roblox can build vehicles out of bricks.  I've also heard it is not possible on our engine.

Reason #1 Complete.

I've also heard it is not possible on our engine.
Well this is completely wrong and you should probably not listen to whoever told you that.

Buildable vehicles can be done in the current version of the engine although not very well. The RTB 1.x method should still work, and there's other ways of doing it, like making a bunch of blank chassis and then making all the different body options turrets. Sure you only get to pick between wheels and a body but that's a minor point.

Changes could be made to the engine that make buildable vehicles better. Since these are engine changes they would need to be made by Badspot. But there is nothing the engine that outright stops modders from modding them or Badspot writing up an official system.

On the other hand, switching to another engine will not get you any closer to this goal. You would still need to write out a system of buildable vehicles for these engines. Blockland doesn't know how to stick bricks onto wheels and neither does any other engine.
