No, it is not possible to get a virus from trying to open an image.
Depending on the embedding method, the extra file is either appended to the back or front, or is in the image in a certain way that it can be read as an image, even if it's just gibberish. That or opening a file with a virus on it with an image editor, will just turn up an 'invalid file' error.

Are you sure they are even related, or that you haven't had them for a long time and just checked?  What does your AV 'diagnose' it as?

I do an automatic scan every 30 minutes and it instantly shows me what viruses pop up. Haven't seen any until this thread. They are "Trojan horse Java/Downloader.(O,N,Q).

After seeing some of his posts, my anti-virus program picked this up. I had the option to quarantine the threats, or delete the file. I chose delete, but quarantine was recommended. I'm still safe though right?
