No. It was nothing special. He jumped off from the boss level down to the castle, saved the princess and the first thing that pops up in Peach's mind is to make a cake for Mario. What the forget?
It's badass because it's a very unique ending but seriously. Mario risks his loving life for searching 120 stars, beating all kind of enemies and Bowser's ass just to get a damn cake. What the forget were they thinking?

Its a bad/good ending but the mario games have a cliched storyline. "Italian plumber saves the princess of a kingdom of mushrooms from a giant angry turtle thing". The only time its different is with the mario and luigi RPG series
