Author Topic: How to clean a badly scratched/damaged GC Disk?  (Read 3229 times)

K.

I found Timesplitters 2 in my room. I loaded it. In a few minutes of NeoTokyo it came up with..

"The disk cannot be read."

Hao2fix?

It has scratches on the bottom. It might be fubar. I don't know.

Buff the surface with toothpaste.

I usually just take some liquid soap and softly rub the disc with it.

i either rub a kiutip againts it or breath on it and then clean it with a soft shirt

That only cleans off dirt, not scratches.

I'd do absoluty loving anything to get this disk clean.

Thanks. I owe you guys if it works.

i heard bananas work well

Buff the surface with toothpaste.
My parents saw me putting toothpaste on one of my PS2 games once and thought I was crazy. :P

Buff the surface with toothpaste.
so i rub it really fast with a cloth and toothpaste?

Put a generous amount on the disc, then rub it in really good with your finger. What you're actually doing is using the toothpaste to buff away a thin layer of the disc's surface to smooth out scratches. Think of it as sandpaper in paste form. Once you've scrubbed it, rinse it completely with water and dry it off with a soft cloth.

A scratch is a sliver missing from the surface of the disk, and if im correct about how discs work, the data is on the surface. I'm pretty sure you can't 'clean' a scratch, because a scratch is missing from the disk. It's like trying to clean my arm that fell off. Using some soap won't make it grow back.

No, you're wrong. The information is underneath a layer of plastic. Scratches diffuses the laser light, so it bounces back into the eye scrambled up. Smoothing the scratches diffuse the light less, allowing the eye to read it correctly.

I was about to say this
the plastic protects the info on the disc from being forgeted up by a little smudge?

No, it's there just cuz it makes it shinier.
