Author Topic: How to build your own laser, tutorial here. UPDATED WITH PICTURES  (Read 4099 times)

Okay. I've been getting a lot of request on were to buy lasers. So, how 'bout I tell you how to make one. Of course you can always look up a fancy tutorial,
but when that fails, you have no one to complain to.

To be honest, I don't think you will find a tutorial as simple as this. This is the easiest way, not necessary the cheapest, but easiest. (Unless you want to buy like 20 diods, heat sinks, and modules, this is the easiest, cheapest)
So it's very simple, and cheap
every thing you will need will be listed below....

Tools

Soldering Iron (Best quality, cheapest I could find)

Vise
(cheapest I could find)

SOLDER:
http://www.amazon.com/American-Terminal-AT-31604-Solder-Ounces/dp/B00030AP48/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=hi&qid=1278663283&sr=8-1

OPTIONAL
Block Of wood preferably 2x4

Now this won't be actually building a laser from scratch, but modifying it, which is the next best thing.
No this isn't pot modding, which is terrible, this is real modding, legal, and a lot better/ more professional.

The reason you want to do this is because:
1.You live in the United states, and it's illegal to get strong lasers imported.
2.It's 10x cheaper.
you can save like hundreds of bucks, because this will be the same quality lasers, as these

Parts

Laser pen (This laser is bascially a laser parts, bundle, Alot of parts in one, all you have to do is disassemble it)
http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.91~r.93098389
200 mW laser module (This is the final part that you will need, this will make your laser, a burning one.)
http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.26891~r.93098389

SUB-TOTAL COST
$80.89

If you already have a vise, and a soldering iron (Alot of people do)
TOTAL COST:
$56.91

That's not bad for something that would cost around $700 (Not potmodded)

TUTORIAL

STEP1-pointer Disassembly
If you do have a wooden block, drill a 1/2 hole in it (One that will fit the laser)
And start by putting the block of wood onto the vise, and your laser into the block of wood

AFTER GENTLY, wiggle  the laser, until the module comes out
Take the button and set it aside, do not lose it!
Take the foam spring protector and the silver cap off of the old module, and screw the silver cap onto the new module.

STEP-2 module mods
De-solder the lead wires that come with the new 200 mW module
De-solder the spring off the old module
Put the spring on the new module:

STEP 3 laser reassembly

Put the button back into the laser pointer, and then align the module's switch with the button.

Put the module and pointer top in a vise and press them together,
 do NOT over tighten.
Put a rag in the vise so you don't smash the pointer with metal on metal contact.

Put the batteries back in , and your ready to go.

This took me like 45 minutes to write, and I'm too lazy to add pictures right now.

If this fails do I have someone to complaint to?

Where would I buy a block of would?

I don't know, a hardware shop? It's very useful, you might have one laying around, a Styrofoam block might work if it's thick enough.
Also please note, deal extreme takes like 30 days to deliver to your mailbox.

Ahh I see.  Do they have a would isle for it, too?

I'm joking, I know where to find wood. It's just you spelled it wrong so I joked about it. Anyways, pretty good guide I guess.

Oh sht, didn't see that.
Alright I calculated a new subtotal, with a cheaper vise.

Tom

You know you could just get the laser module and attach it to a cheap battery pack.

Not with out a heat sink, so no. (the housing)

This. Is. Amazing. (not sparta)

Bumps... Next time I won't post threads at 4 in the morning.
