If you read the Halo books, you'd know the Covenant would always land on planets to either look for "relics" or disable planetary defense platforms in space from the ground.

If they find nothing, or succeed in disabling the orbital defenses, they just glass the planet.

I don't think aliens would be inherently hostile necessarily. If they were worse than us they'd kill themselves the second they harnessed atomic energy.

Uh what? We already have atomic energy, it's called a nuclear power plant. Even then, NPP's are amazingly efficient, produce tons of energy, release no pollution at all, and spent fuel rods can be disposed of quite easily and safely.

Karl Sagan proposed that alien beings probably wouldn't appear in physical form, that by the time they found us they would have reached a higher level of being outside of matter.

Kinda confusing to think about but if you ever watched 2001: A Space Odyssey, the monoliths are in fact alien beings.
