I tried punching a parasite off. I was successful only once. The rest of the times I ended up on only hurting my team mates more.

That's the point. It's entirely possible to avoid them completely. Flamethrower. I survived almost all the way through the residential level after my teammates died using the flamethrower to purge egg-infested areas beforehand. Just don't let them hatch.
