FOCUS HOME INTERACTIVE ANNOUNCES CITIES XL 2011

With this press release, we'd like to inform you that Focus Home Interactive acquired Cities XL and the current developments of the game.

This fall, Focus will launch Cities XL 2011, an enriched version which will meet all the expectations of City Builder's fans.

"It's important not to leave Cities XL without a future, declares Cedric Lagarrigue, CEO of Focus Home Interactive. Though the game may not have reached the ambitious objectives set forth by Monte Cristo, it has been successful in Europe and via online platforms. There's a community that's developed around the game, hopes and expectations that we cannot leave without a future. We are convinced that the game must make its mark and become a reference as promised during the pre-release announcements of the original 2009 game. We will therefore release Cities XL 2011 in October and will do so with the intent to please those who bought the earlier version. Moreover, we are working on a special offer for the game's release which we will soon reveal. As for the other City Builder and management game fans, Cities XL 2011's content, options, and features should give them great satisfaction."

For those of you who don't know what Cities XL is/was, it was a city building game similar to the Sim City games except expanding more upon which Sim City is already based upon, such as retail shopping and adding in the ability to make much neater looking transportation systems (i.e. curved bridges /drool).

The game was running barely smoothly as there were confirmed reports of a rather large memory leak within the game that almost renders the game unplayable on large cities or for large periods of time, even on most high end systems. Despite this and even multiple memory leaks as there were found out, Monte Cristo eventually realized they're draining their wallet and pulled the plug on their online service for Cities XL, Planet Offer, which allowed players to create a city on separate planets that only interacted with the cities on the same planet and visit other cities by other players.

Cities XL was a large disappointment. The memory leaks and lack of support from Monte Cristo sealed the games fate until this press release.

tl;dr; stuffty game, then bought out by another developer and promises to make it better.

P.S.

In other words; "Free/heavily discounted copy of Cities XL 2011 to anyone who owns Cities XL on Steam" deal is in the talks.

I've been waiting for Sim City 5 for seven years.

and no, Societies doesn't count because that game was a steaming stuffpile and doesn't deserve to have "Sim City" in front of it.

Yeah, I don't think there'll be better after Maxis is now officially enslaved by EA to release boring games.

SC4 is the closest you'll get. Hey, it has more than any other SimCity ever had. I've been waiting for so long for the lightning disaster and we finally got it in SC4.

Amen brother, Amen.

ffs, stop making mediocre games and go back to being a genius.

I lost my spore... :C

Cell stage: stuff
Creature stage: Meh
Tribal stage: I'm an RTS fan, so that's pretty cool
Civ stage: Bullstuff
Space stage: Pretty decent, never got around to conquering the galaxy though.

This isn't a Spore thread, take Spore to its own thread.

Discuss the hopeful awesomeness that might be Cities XL 2011.

So have I, but Maxis claims Societies is as close as you'll get. I like SC4 but for me it's too damn hard to make stuff thrive without making your city suck ass.

Ok seriously?
This isn't anyone elses loving thread.

Go make another thread so you can moap and whine about how the latest Maxis games sucked richard and how Sim City 4 finances are too difficult.

Ok seriously?

My bad.

Anyway is this actually better than Sim City?

Well, Cities XL was sort of fun. It was easier if you just kept going and going and going and didn't stop dead in your tracks (and watch your income go from the green thousands to the red negative ten thousands), and you aren't at all limited to a grid placement which allows for neighborhoods of any size and roads/bridges that actually just normally curve instead of jutting diagonally, it's better.

The only thing is just do NOT buy Cities XL. It's just a total waste with the memory leaks and if you don't even have a high end computer you're forgeted. Inv3rted couldn't even run it speedily with his GTX285's in SLI and 8GB of RAM.

It's fun really but the performance problems in Cities XL just ruin it. Just wait for XL 2011.

It sounds bitchin'.

I might have to look into it more, provided they fixed all the crap in the earlier one.

I also think that the game is a little more beginner oriented IMO than SimCity, 4 especially.

In SimCity you can zone dense industrial, residential or commercial right off the bat which throws off beginners sort of. In XL, you start with very basic zones and work your way into denser zoning.

Also maps are much more realistic but sadly there are no disasters or terraforming :(

Damn, I always enjoyed the fire.

The part about the retail shopping and etc. was a bit unclear, would that be more interactive here?
