Myst was the best selling video game from 1993 to 2002.

It's was great for the graphics because they were supposedly awesome. It was a bunch of pre-rendered images. realMyst is where it's at.

I'm a huge fan of Myst, mainly because I played it a lot when I was a child.  That game literally drove me insane, though.  Now that I know what to do, I can beat it very easily (and have done at least ten times).

I'm fairly certain my brother left a copy in my possession when he moved out, but I've never got it to work.

I still have my old copy, but I can't save my game.   :(   That's why I have it on my DS and iPod.

That's because it's a movie. You can animate every little bit and then render it over the span of days or render it chunks and stitch it together. Games have to be rendered on the fly and in less than a second on commercially available and widespread equipment. That's why 3D games looked like this in 1993:
