The concept for chain ones such as these is not that difficult. He makes the same shape facing perpendicular. He then cuts the interior until he gets to the edge of the shape intersecting. Doing this will leave a small bar between the two links, and he just files that out.

I still know I would never have the patience to practice enough to do something as awesome as this

What tool did he use for that? I might like to try that... Just need some real pencils.
