The way I see is that, if we destroy he earth and its resources than we destroy the earth and its resources. I highly doubt here is anyway of avoiding it. The reason for this is greed. I have no doubt that we have the means to build stuff that doesn't require fossil fuels but nobody uses them because thousands of people would loose a lot of money on the oil trade. Hell, we probably have a cure for cancer but it would make a lot of medicine companies lose a lot of many.

They should start selling nuclear waste in jars. Then everyone could contribute to storing nuclear waste.

California gets most of it's energy from geothermal plants, I am surprised no one has even mentioned it. Also the moon has a massive amount of helium-3, 1 spaceship full of helium-3 can power the whole entire USA for 1 year.
