My friends mother had cancer, and for pain killing she took morphine lolipops, which null the pain completely. Of course, me and some friends tried one (and only 1) and I ended up breaking my wrist while on it and not noticing.

But they had religion then. In fact, many of their religious rituals and ideals were enforced in or heavily influenced the government. Most, if not all, ancient (And many modern) civilizations have been built with the foundation of a religion or some ideals that branch from religion. At this point, it's near impossible to do anything without religious influence, seeing as it - in some form - has existed almost as long as we have. :o
