Author Topic: RTB Premium Service  (Read 24953 times)

I've been thinking about offering a premium RTB service either for a single one-time fee or a subscription and it'd be good to get some discussion going on whether this would be worth the effort or not.

It costs me in the realm of $100 to host the RTB servers for a month at the moment, which obviously doesn't come out of nowhere. With some of the upcoming features (such as the ability to store all your saves/screenshots on our servers) this cost is likely to rise with the increase in disk space it could consume.

The RTB service would be free to use as normal and you'd still be able to do everything you've always been able to. Subscribing/buying the premium service could entitle you to:

  • A cool badge to show off to all your friends
  • Priority access to beta releases
  • More storage space to keep your save files/screenshots on RTB
  • Ability to create a chat room on RTB Connect for your clan/whatever

Obviously all the revenue would go straight to covering server costs. I can't see us ever making a profit. Feel free to discuss what you think could be included as part of the premium service, or whether you think it's a terrible idea entirely! Keep in mind though that the idea behind this is to reduce the cost of our hosting fees - not to profit from.

It would be OK , you should have some profit from the long-ass coding you do.
I would make it single time payment tough.

The thing about single/monthly payments is the disk space increase is something that costs us monthly. So if you pay $5 for the increase, we then have to cover the costs you incur on that new space forever more. Whereas it might make sense to charge like $2 a month so that this is always covered.

But then the issue with monthly payments is that they suck generally, and it's much more of a hassle to deal with. I think I'd like to go with a one-time payment too but possibly an option to subscribe with EVEN MORE features. Beats me, I'll see what other people thing.

Is'nt there already a Donation button on RTB?

No, we've never accepted donations before.

What would the price be?

Like a Blockland key or around that?

I see what you mean , eventually evryone will have it , you won't get anymore money but the costs keep coming.
Perhaps the levels-of-features is indeed a good idea.

I wouldn't expect people to pay $20 for those extra features ... I think it'd be a one time of $5 or $10 maximum. Although we could have even bigger badges for people who choose to offer more. I'm just throwing ideas around here.

Microsoft uses "level-of-features" alot.

$5, $10, or pick your price sounds good.

I'd pay more then required.

Also, It's your birthday?
Happy birthday if it is.

"I'd donate 10$"

Your edit just got ruined.

RTB is fancy , handy but lacking a donate option.

This would be a good idea but if the user sends money and recieves the ZIP file and pirates it wouln't we have a problem?

Couldn't we work with things like keys?
