As the two wrestled, something strange happened indeed. The volleys of punches and kicks turned into tender kisses and gentle caresses, and the shouts of anger and obscenities turned to moans of pleasure and sighs of happiness. Michael rose from the ground and gently brushed himself off, putting his hand out for Lucy. Both of them were as red as beets.

“M… Michael?” She asked in a gentle tone, far much more so than her usual demeanor. His mind was racing. He sighed and averted his gaze from her.

“Lucy, I…” He began.

She took a step back and looked as if she was to cry. “It’s ok, Michael… I understand. I should just let this go, you’ve found...” She paused and took a shuddering breath. “You’ve found someone you really love, Sandy. I’ll… be alright.”

Her strength had disappeared and she was quivering in the warm light of the spotlights. There was an awkward silence and Lucy sniffled.

“Well, I’m gonna get going, I gotta… see a teacher.”

Michael watched her step off the stage, feeling his heart palpitate as she bent over to scoop up her backpack. So many thoughts raced through his head, he felt faint. She shot one tearful look back at him and turned to leave the auditorium. Every waking fiber of Michael’s being screamed as she was departing, egging him on to call her back. He had a brilliant idea and trotted over to the CD player. It was time for him to admit his wrongdoings. As her hand hit the heavy door to the auditorium, Michael’s voice echoed from the speakers behind her.

“Lucy, please…” He said.

She turned to face him as the CD player began to emit the sweet sounds of the 1950s.

“You’re my love, you’re my angel. You’re the girl of my dreams. I’d like to thank you, for waiting patiently. Daddy’s home. Daddy’s home to stay.”

He sang to her from the depths of his heart as the saxophone from the song echoed around the empty auditorium. She slowly approached him, and he kept singing his heart out to her.

“How I’ve waited for this moment, to be by your side. Your best friend wrote and told me you had teardrops in your eyes. Daddy’s home. Daddy’s home to stay.”

Lucy felt tears well up in her eyes as Michael bent down to extend his hand to her. She let her backpack slip off and eagerly grabbed hold of his hand. He pulled her up onto the stage and into a tight embrace, gently rocking her to the beat of the song.

“It wasn’t on a Sunday, Monday and Tuesday went by. It wasn’t on a Tuesday afternoon, all I could do was cry. But I made a promise that you treasured. I made it back home to you.”

Lucy pressed her head against Michael’s shoulder as he continued to rock her, singing quietly to her. She began to sob softly, staining his fur with water. He stopped dancing and held her close before gently grabbing hold of her chin and raising her head. Her ears were laid back and her lips were trembling.

“Daddy’s home.” He told her, grinning.

She returned the grin, staring into Michael’s eyes. They slowly shut as they leaned in to kiss. Her body melted as Michael’s lips met hers, her dreams realized. She sighed as Michael broke the kiss, rubbing his nose against hers.

“I was wrong, Lucy. I was… afraid. Afraid of so many things.”

She pressed a finger to his lips and giggled. “We can talk later, for now… just hold me.”

Michael nodded gently and she rested her head on his shoulder. He slowly rocked her, holding her close. As they stood there, a loud voice echoed throughout the auditorium.

“Finally!” It shouted, causing Michael and Lucy to break apart.

Sue strode down the aisle with her planner in hand and took a seat in the front row, crossing her legs and impatiently tapping the end of her pen on the arm of the chair. Michael and Lucy blushed, but Sue didn’t seem fazed.

“I see you were working on Act Two, Scene three. That’s nice and all, but let’s start from the top, and chop chop because the rest of the cast will be arriving soon.”

She grinned and stared up at them. Michael and Lucy exchanged a tender glance before opening their pamphlets and beginning the performance from the start.
