I was confused at first, too.
Press escape, then type in the hotkeys for the elements to combine all of them into one. Some results can be cool.
EDIT:
I + J + H + T + E
Go to "Points" graphic style.
Singled Cell organism?
It doesn't split in half on it's own, but chunks sometimes break off and form new ones.
Works best when you scatter multiple dots of it everywhere.
Also remember to disable gravity :U
