Ditto is a useful gimmick Pokemon, unlike a duo of Pichu clones that we know of.

now if i was fighting double battles/breeding pokemon i might not dislike Ditto so much, i mostly dislike using him in single battles.

Ditto's dream world ability in Gen5 mkaes him about a billion times better. You don't have to use transform, his ability makes him transform and it copies stats and stuff and I don't know fully how it works but basically he sucks way less if you have his dream world ability, eccentric.
