Augmented reality is essentially where you overlay virtual objects in real life.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Augmented_reality
The most common program is ARToolKit. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ARToolKit
(Here's a video of me using it: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5nKdoOGXFJ4 )
It is so god damn amazing. I'm learning to script games and stuff in it.
Instructions for downloading:
1. Download DSVideoLib. I'm not exactly sure how I did it, so just look up instructions online.
2. Download Cygwin from cygwin.com. Instructions on website.
3. Now it gets relatively complicated. Download GLUT from this page. http://www.xmission.com/~nate/glut.html
Download the file named "glut-3.7.6-bin.zip (117 KB)". Extract the folder to your desktop.
4. Download ARToolKit from here: http://sourceforge.net/projects/artoolkit/files/artoolkit/2.72.1/ARToolKit-2.72.1-bin-win32.zip/download. Extract the folder to the desktop.
5. Take the GLUT folder and place it in your ARToolKit folder. Then cut the files in the GLUT folder and paste them into the "bin" folder inside the ARToolKit folder.
6. Download and print this image:
7. Run "simpleTest.exe" in the "bin" folder.
8. Hold the piece of paper with the HIRO square up to the camera.
9. ???
10. Profit.

Okay either I'm just being dull or how the forget do you install this once you've downloaded it? I don't see any sort of setup application or the like anywhere.

but without the virtual

I'm assuming the file is a .zip file?

I'm assuming the file is a .zip file?

Yeah, but the contents are really weird. It's nothing I've ever seen before, and despite my best attempts to search every damn folder in the entire extracted .zip folder, I cannot find any sort of "setup" application.

Dude this stuff is so cool. A year or two back I saw something like this but I didn't understand it too well. I think it was a game, though. Like an RTS.

Wish I could find it :(

Glad to see someone else who is interested in AR! I highly suggest you watch the anime Denno Coil, I think it's a great example of an AR environment. I'm serious, you really should watch it, it's great for inspiration.

Also, I'm looking forward to the glasses featured in this article:
http://spectrum.ieee.org/tech-talk/at-work/innovation/finally-an-augmented-reality-i-can-stomach

From what I can tell, this is one of the first 'good' AR glasses that a consumer might be able to get.

As far as the ARToolkit goes, I've wanted to use it, but I lack a good webcam to really use it with. The coolest thing I've seen done with it was where someone made the glyphs tools. One of them was a cursor, you could grab virtual objects with it and move them around. The other ones allowed you to scale/rotate objects when you linked them to each other.

The day I am able to move things around my computer with my hands without a tablet computer is the day I am a happy man.

AR Glasses?!

I better start saving. I'd love AR games with that thing. I can finally go water skiing or to a shooting gallery :D

someone help me get it to work

It's a pain in the ass- I'll give instructions tomorrow afteroon.
