My 5th grade science teacher went to Haiti a few years ago with a bunch of college students. He had been there before, and it was beautiful. He was going to the same village, in fact.
When he got there, there was trash everywhere, the grass was all yellow, there was a tree lodged in the river, along with broken boats, etc.
They don't know how to take care of their society. Why should we give them money?

Restoration is always possible, but it depends on who is restoring it and why; The land can be beautiful again, it's just a matter of finding someone who wants it to be beautiful and who will actually do something about it.

I'm not saying that; Hundreds of organiztions, I'm sure, have been dedicated to helping them. But they also must help themselves at some point. Certainly we shouldn't hold them down, but we can't carry them forever. Which is why someone has to decide, like I said, to regrow that beauty. And which is why they must decide to maintain it. And, most importantly, to actually act on those decisions.

(Also, I'm using beauty as a blanket term. Not just make the land look pretty, but actually raise maintence in it, raise quality of life, make it safer, etc.)
