Author Topic: I have an empty 2GB Flashdrive. What should I do with it?  (Read 2344 times)

All of you are stupid for thinking he'd do that.

Be serious, guys. For once.

How do you do that?

Because my dad has a 2TB external hard drive holy stuff.
SEEMINGLY INFINITE RAM.

Well, it can at the very least hit the Windows limit.
It would be used as a paging file.

If your regular RAM is at it's maximum capacity, then Windows will use the paging file. But if you access the drive while the paging file is in use on it, it may cause slow-downs, so watch out for that.

Otherwise, it's a good idea, but the maximum amount of space allocated for a paging file, I believe (at least in XP), is 3X your installed RAM.

Uh, If you would read this thread you'd realize it would be more productive to fill that HD with research.
Bro, 2TB is over 2,000GB.

Dude, I have plenty of room for epic pr0nz.

Now, hao2use4RAM?

Step one.
Download Gay research.

Step two.
Plant said Gay research at a friends house.

Step three.
Ask what it is then plug it in and be like OMG GHEY PRONZ

What operating system do you have?

I believe you're able to use external USB hard drives as paging files, just make sure not to remove it while using it.

What operating system do you have?
It depends on where I am.

If I'm at my mom's house, I have access to XP, Vista, and W7, if I'm at my dad's, I have W7, and if I'm at my grandmother's I have XP.

Five computers hell yes.

I don't know if you really want to use your external HD as a paging file though, USB/Firewire interfaces can be rather slow compared to an internal hard drive.

It may have a performance hit or it could do something bad to your computer if you were to remove the HD without taking the paging file off of the External HD.

It's possible, but it doesn't seem that great of an idea.

Look up some stuff on paging files.

hi night.
I didn't know that the title of this thread was 'post in this thread instead of using PM'

You can only use high speed flash memory based devices for Windows Readyboost. Since a hard drive is a physical spinning disk(s) with read/write arms that have to actually move to access data, they are inefficient for this task.  Flash drives use electrons to hold data, and there are no moving parts, so you can access random parts of the drive with no delay.  Derp

Wrong: all current electronic devices have a transient frequency response cap. Flash memory just happens to have a a very fast response time at the working frequency compared to a standard hard drive.

You can give the flashdrive to me.

Well yeah.  I meant to say physical delay I guess.

No, the delay is very much physical. It's certainly not magical.

Yes, but an arm doesn't have to move across a platter to read the data.
